This bathroom remodel transformed a 1980s tiled space in a San Francisco Edwardian home into a Japanese-inspired sanctuary centered around a hand-built cedar soaking tub. Designed as a place of calm and ritual, the room balances warmth, material honesty, and precise craftsmanship.
The centerpiece of the space is an immense cantilevered walnut counter, hand-carved by Kenji Hasegawa. The sculpted slab serves as a dramatic platform for a double cast bronze sink by artist Dave Holsonback, its surface extending generously to allow shared use while maintaining a sense of balance and flow.
Paired with matte silver fixtures by Hansgrohe and surrounded by natural textures, the room integrates traditional Japanese influences with contemporary functionality. The result is a serene bathing environment where craftsmanship and design come together in quiet harmony.
